Rainbow butterfly Color: Your Home Decorating Secret WeaponColor can be one of the most effective tools you can use when decorating your home. In fact, color factors into almost every home decorating decision that you’ll ever make, at least in one form or another.

Whether you’re planning to repaint a room or you’re shopping for furniture, floor coverings or decorating accessories, it’s almost inevitable that color will factor into your final decision. If you’d like to learn how to use color more effectively in your home, here are a few tricks I’ve discovered.

Using color to create a mood

When it comes to color, there is more to consider than just making sure things “match.” In fact, there have actually been studies performed that show how different colors can affect a person’s mood. Understanding the connection between human emotion and color can be quite useful when decorating your home.

If you’re interested in learning some of the finer points of color, you’ll have no problems finding detailed charts online that describe the various effects each shade can have on one’s emotions. However, if you’re simply interested in the basics, just remember that cool colors tend to be relaxing while warm colors tend to be more energizing. Using this knowledge, it’s easy to see why relaxing blue and green shades can be good choices for bedrooms, while cheerful yellow, orange and red shades can work well in the kitchen and other family-centric rooms.

Using Color to Create Space

In addition to affecting a person’s mood, color can also be used to alter a person’s perception of size and space. I find it interesting to see how light and dark colors can actually make rooms look larger or smaller. For example, if you have a large living room that seems uninviting and a bit cavernous, a dark wall shade can be used to make it seem a bit cozier.

On the other hand, if your bathroom is too small, try using white or light colors to make it seem more spacious. Of course, color can’t change the actual dimensions of a room. But as with everything else in life, perception is often just as important as reality.

Use Color to Add Visual Interest

Color is definitely a good tool to use when you want to add visual interest to your home decorating scheme. When you look at a professionally designed room, you’ll almost always find at least one strong focal point. Of course, there are many different methods that can be used to create eye-catching features. However, color is one of the easiest and most effective tools you can use if you want to create a focal point.

For example, a colorful piece of abstract art could be very eye-catching when displayed in a predominantly neutral-colored room. Conversely, white woodwork definitely “pops” when it’s used against dark colored walls. It can be a lot of fun to create visually exciting and eye-catching effects throughout your home, using nothing more than color. Whether you prefer the visual excitement of using contrasting shades or the more relaxing effect of using coordinating colors, the end result is sure to be beautiful.
